Command’s Weight Limits guide gives each product its own weight capacity, from 1/2 pound for the Clear Mini Hooks to 8 pounds for the Sticky Nail Wire-Back Hanger. Command says limits vary by product and strip size. It says to check the front of the package and not to hang anything heavier than the limit listed there.
What Command says about weight
- Extra strips: “Only use the number of strips shown in the product instructions. Adding extra strips does not always increase the weight limit and incorrect use may cause the item to fall.”
- Picking a hook: Command says to pick a hook rated for the weight of your item, one that still meets or exceeds it.
- Heavier items: it points to products rated for them, such as large hooks, jumbo hooks, picture hangers or picture hanging strips, and says to check the weight rating on the package.
- Falls: Command lists exceeding the weight limit among the common reasons a hook falls, with a dirty surface, the wrong surface, hanging too soon, humidity and temperature changes.
To give a feel for the numbers, Command’s guide compares them to groceries: a 16 oz bag of coffee beans is one pound, a standard bag of apples three pounds, a standard bag of potatoes five pounds, and a gallon of milk about eight pounds. We’d weigh the item on a kitchen or bathroom scale rather than guess.

The guide lists some products, such as decorating clips, cord clips, light clips and the Fog-Resistant Mirror, without a weight capacity. For those, check the package.
Command’s how-to pages say not to hang valuable or irreplaceable items, or to hang over beds. For anything heavier than the package allows, or that could hurt someone if it fell, we’d use a screw and anchor: see choosing a wall anchor on our drill bit site.
