Epoxy resin calculator

A pour 24 by 12 inches and 1/8 inch deep takes about 20 fl oz of mixed epoxy, 10 of resin and 10 of hardener at 1:1.

Shape

Mix ratio, A to B by volume (on the kit)

Depth in decimals: 1/8″ is 0.125, 1/4″ is 0.25, 1/2″ is 0.5.

How much epoxy to mix?

19.9fl oz of mixed epoxy

Part A (resin): 9.97 fl oz, 295 mL. Part B (hardener): 9.97 fl oz, 295 mL. That’s 1:1 by volume, 590 mL in all.

  • The arithmetic: 24 × 12 × 0.125 inches = 36 cubic inches. A US gallon is 231 cubic inches and a fluid ounce 1.805.
  • By weight the ratio is different, because resin and hardener weigh different amounts. ArtResin mixes 1:1 by volume but 100 to 84 by weight; TotalBoat ThickSet, 1:1 by volume, 1.11 to 1 by weight; TotalBoat Fathom, 2:1 by volume, 100 to 44 by weight. Go by the label on your kit.
  • The volume is the space to fill, with nothing added for spills or what stays in the cup.

Mix by the ratio on the kit

WEST SYSTEM’s 105 resin mixes 5 to 1 with its 205 and 206 hardeners and 3 to 1 with 207 and 209. TotalBoat Fathom mixes 2 to 1, and ArtResin and TotalBoat ThickSet 1 to 1. Each figure is by volume. WEST SYSTEM says not to change the ratio to adjust the cure time, and TotalBoat says not to adjust Fathom’s ratio.

Mix ratio by volume and by weight, from each maker

TotalBoat ThickSet1:11.11:1
TotalBoat Fathom2:1100:44
WEST SYSTEM 105 with 205 or 2065:15:1
WEST SYSTEM 105 with 207 or 2093:1Not given

ArtResin says the weight ratio differs from the volume ratio because resin and hardener have different densities.

How deep one pour can be

TotalBoat says to mix only as much ThickSet as you’ll use in the next 20 minutes, and no more than a gallon of it at a time. Fathom’s sheet gives at least 48 hours before demolding deep or large pours, and 72 hours for smaller ones.

Mixed epoxy heats up as it cures. WEST SYSTEM says several inches of it in a mixing cup can get hot enough to melt the cup, burn your skin or ignite combustible materials, and TotalBoat says a mass of Fathom can reach 200 to 300°F or hotter when poured thicker than its instructions allow. When to pour depends on the epoxy. ArtResin says to pour right after mixing and not to let a large volume sit in the cup, while TotalBoat says to let mixed Fathom sit in the pail for 20 to 30 minutes so bubbles rise. Follow your kit’s sheet, and keep to its layer depth.

Common questions

How do I measure a round pour?

Measure straight across the middle for the diameter. The calculator works out 3.1416 times the radius squared, times the depth.

Is a 1:1 epoxy also 1:1 by weight?

No. ArtResin, mixed 1:1 by volume, is 100 to 84 by weight, and TotalBoat ThickSet 1.11 to 1. Weigh only if the kit gives a weight ratio.

How many fluid ounces are in a gallon?

128. A US gallon is 231 cubic inches and a fluid ounce about 1.805, by NIST's tables.

Where we get our information from

The mix ratios and layer depths come from WEST SYSTEM’s, ArtResin’s and TotalBoat’s own instructions and data sheets, and the units from NIST’s tables; the arithmetic is shown with every answer. Checked against published data from ArtResin, TotalBoat, WEST SYSTEM and National Institute of Standards and Technology.
