Each maker gives its own distance, for its own tile. With a stove that has no back panel or metal cover, Smart Tiles says to leave 8 inches clear behind it, Art3d says 16 inches from the top of a gas stove, and two Brewster backsplash tiles say 15 inches. Con-Tact Brand doesn’t recommend its liner near an open heat source at all.
Heat distance, per product
| Product | Stove with no back panel | Other heat limits | Countertops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Tiles (wall tiles) | “a safety zone of 8 inches without Smart Tiles behind your stove or cooktop” | 2 inches from countertop ovens, toasters and toaster ovens; a surface no hotter than 120°F | On its do-not-install list |
| Art3d vinyl peel and stick tiles | “Do not install tiles less than 16 inches away from the top of the stove.” (gas stove) | No direct contact between the tiles and flames | “Do not use these as a countertop covering surface.” |
| Brewster Subway White Peel & Stick Luxury Wall Tiles | “15 in (38 cm) of space from range” | Not stated | Not stated |
| Brewster Basketweave Carrara Peel & Stick Backsplash | “15 in (38 cm) of space or more above range” | Not stated | Not stated |
| Quadrostyle tile stickers | Sold as suitable behind your stove, with no distance given | High heat softens the adhesive | Its 500-micron stickers name countertops |
| Con-Tact Brand self-adhesive liner | Not recommended near an open heat source | Lukewarm or very low heat only; no open flames | Not stated |
| Tempaper peel and stick wallpaper | No distance given | Avoid prolonged heat | Not stated |
Each figure is that product’s own, from its page, FAQ or guide. Smart Tiles’ warranty repeats its 8 inch (20 cm) and 2 inch (6 cm) gaps and its 120°F limit as conditions of cover.
Smart Tiles near the cooktop
To avoid direct steam, ventilation or an open flame from a gas stove, Smart Tiles suggests its Smart Panel instead, a rigid panel put up with construction adhesive. Smart Tiles says the panels shouldn’t go above 140°F. It also warns that spices rich in colorants, such as turmeric, can stain its tiles for good.
Fireplaces
Smart Tiles’ FAQ says its tiles can go around a fireplace if the surface stays at or below 120°F with no direct heat or flame, and that fumes leaking from a fireplace that isn’t tightly sealed can burn or yellow them. Its warranty page says they should not be installed in a fireplace. We’d keep peel-and-stick tile off a fireplace unless that maker’s own limit clearly fits yours.
Finishing the job
- At the countertop: Smart Tiles recommends a silicone-based caulk between its tiles and the counter to limit water getting in. See countertop and backsplash caulk.
- The wall: Brewster says its Subway White tiles may not stick to unclean, textured, recently painted or nonstick surfaces. Art3d lists painted gypsum, smooth ceramic tile, glass, acrylic, stainless steel and laminate as good surfaces.
- Cleaning: Smart Tiles asks for mild, non-abrasive cleaners such as dish soap, cream cleaner or glass cleaner, and no strong chemicals.
The stove and fireplace figures here are each maker’s own, for its own product. If your stove or cooktop’s own instructions ask for more clearance from the wall, we’d follow those.
