The counter-to-wall joint
GE calls the joint where the counter meets the backsplash one of the most leak-prone spots in a kitchen. Its steps: wipe it with isopropyl alcohol rather than a soap-based cleaner, run the bead, and tool it within 5 to 10 minutes. Most GE silicones take water after 30 minutes, but GE says to wait 24 hours for a full cure.
Painted wall or trim: GE says only its hybrids, such as Pro Seal Max, take paint; its silicones don’t.
New tile backsplash: GE says to let the grout cure at least 24 hours before sealing.
Color: Loctite suggests clear or almond on darker granite, since white leaves an obvious line.

Granite, marble and staining
Natural stone is porous. Soudal, a sealant maker, explains that silicone oil or plasticizers can soak into it and leave stains that may not come out, and that a sealant which passes the ISO 16938-1 test can claim to be non-staining on that type of stone.

It can. Loctite's and GE's data sheets for some silicones warn of blemishing on natural stone and say to test first. GE's article says neutral-cure silicone won't stain it.
What caulk for a backsplash I'll paint?
We'd use a paintable hybrid: GE names Pro Seal Max, and DAP AMP lists backsplashes and takes latex paint.
