The sink rim
Existing sink: GE runs a bead of sealant around the whole sink where it meets the countertop.
Drop-in sink: lift it out and lay a continuous bead where the rim will sit on the counter, GE says.
Undermount sink: a continuous bead where the rim meets the underside of the counter, with clips, brackets or rails to hold it. Loctite rules out its POLYSEAMSEAL All-Purpose caulk for under-mount sinks.
Faucet base and drain: putty or silicone
Oatey, which makes plumber’s putty, says it goes under basket strainers and faucet bases, doesn’t cure, so you can test the sink right away, and isn’t an adhesive. Oatey says to use 100% silicone instead where the part is ABS, and to read the fixture maker’s instructions first, since some call for silicone or come with a gasket. Loctite’s drain guide recommends silicone.
On a stone counter, Oatey says regular oil-based putty may stain granite, marble, quartz and sandstone, and sells a stain-free putty for them.
Both are used. Oatey says putty doesn't need to cure but isn't for ABS parts, where it says to use 100% silicone. Loctite's drain guide recommends silicone.
Can I caulk an undermount sink?
GE runs a bead where the rim meets the underside of the counter and supports the sink with clips or rails. Loctite says not to use its POLYSEAMSEAL All-Purpose for under-mount sinks.
