Not every mounting tape is made for outside. Gorilla Heavy Duty and Invisible Hold, Scotch-Mount Multipurpose Gel Tape, both T-Rex mounting tapes and Loctite Power Grab are rated outdoor by their makers. Most say to apply them above 50°F.

From each product’s page, data sheet or instruction sheet. Gorilla Double-Sided Tape is not a mounting tape: Gorilla says not to use it to hang heavy-duty items. Loctite says Power Grab is not suitable for water immersion. 3M’s VHB 5952 is rated indoors and out but sold for industrial use only.
Indoor only
- Gorilla Max Strength Mounting Tape: “OUTDOOR – No, indoor only.”
- Scotch-Mount Indoor, Scotch Indoor and Scotch Clear mounting tapes: sold for indoor use, applied at 50 to 100°F.
- Loctite Fun-Tak: “Designed for interior use only.”
- Command regular hooks and strips: Command says regular indoor strips are not made for outdoor conditions.
Gorilla’s Multi-Purpose Mounting Tape is the odd one: its spec block says outdoor yes, while its description calls it great for everyday indoor projects. We’d treat it as indoor until Gorilla says otherwise.
Cold weather
Most of these tapes say not to apply them below 50°F: Gorilla’s mounting tapes, T-Rex and Loctite. Gorilla Double-Sided Tape goes down to 40°F. Scotch-Mount Gel Tape’s spec table gives −25°F as its minimum application temperature, and Command’s outdoor hook sheet says to apply from 15°F.
For anything heavy, or anything that could hurt someone if it fell, we’d use a fastener instead: see choosing a masonry anchor and choosing a wall anchor on our drill bit site.
