Super glue on rubber
Gorilla’s and Loctite’s super glues list rubber, which suits small, stiff fixes. Loctite says its gel isn’t for repairs that need high flexibility, so a sole that bends with every step needs a shoe glue.
Rubbers many glues rule out
Oily or soft rubber. Gorilla says Original Gorilla Glue and Gorilla Epoxy aren’t for rubber with a lot of oil or plasticizer in it, and Gorilla Epoxy Ultimate isn’t for rubber or vinyl at all.
Flexible rubber. J-B Weld says most of its products won’t bond well to it, and Loctite Metal Glue excludes rubber.
Neoprene, urethane and foam rubber. Loctite’s Vinyl, Fabric & Plastic glue rules these out.
Silicone rubber. Loctite’s super glues exclude it. See silicone.
Fumes
Use both shoe glues with fresh air. Shoe Goo’s solvents are toluene and petroleum distillates, which its data sheet marks flammable. Loctite says Shoe Glue gives off methanol as it cures, which may cause dizziness, headache or nausea, and calls for a well-ventilated area and gloves.
The shoe glues’ times and the rubbers each glue rules out come from the makers’ product pages, data sheets and FAQs. Checked against published data from Gorilla Glue Company, Henkel, J-B Weld, Eclectic Products and Pittsburgh Paints Company.
