It depends on the tube: makers give water ready times from right away to 3 days, and full cure from a day to two weeks. Most fast times also need a thin bead in warm, humid enough air.
Three stages
GE splits it into three, and the makers’ data sheets give a time for each:
Touch dry. The surface has skinned over and no longer feels wet. GE says that’s fine for light contact but doesn’t mean the joint is ready.
Water or rain ready. It can take moisture without washing away or losing its hold.
Fully cured. The whole depth of the bead has set, with its full strength and stretch.

Why the same kind cures at different speeds
Two DAP silicones show it: the 100% Silicone Kitchen, Bath & Plumbing needs 12 hours before water, and SILICONE MAX needs 30 minutes. GE’s silicones reach their 30 minutes only with a thin bead in warm, humid enough air, and otherwise wait 8 hours.
Thickness. GE says its silicone cures about 2 to 3 mm deep a day at 73°F and 50% humidity, so a thick bead takes longer.
Humidity. GE notes that many silicones cure by reacting with moisture in the air, so dry air slows them. DAP says low humidity may slow SILICONE MAX.
Cold. Warm air helps and cold slows it down. DAP and Red Devil ask that no rain or frost come within 24 hours for several of their latex caulks.
Can I shower? Can I paint?
For a shower, wait out the water-ready time on your tube. GE adds that its 30-minute silicones are ready for light splashes then, and should get 24 hours before full use or scrubbing. For paint, the times above are for latex paint: for oil-based paint, GE asks for a latex primer first on its hybrids and 24 hours on its acrylics.
As long as the water-ready time on the tube: 30 minutes for DAP SILICONE MAX, 12 hours for DAP 100% Silicone, 24 hours for DAP KWIK SEAL in white (36 for clear). GE suggests 24 hours before scrubbing even its fast silicones.
How long before rain?
It's on the tube. DAP DYNAFLEX ULTRA (white and colors) is rain ready in 1 hour and GE's window and door silicones in 30 minutes under GE's conditions, while Sashco wants 1 to 3 days for Big Stretch.
Does heat make caulk dry faster?
GE says warm conditions usually help a sealant cure and cold slows it, and that humidity matters too, since many silicones cure with moisture from the air.
Is touch dry the same as cured?
No. GE says a bead can feel dry on the surface while it's still soft underneath, and full cure takes from a day to two weeks or more, by the product.
Every time comes from the product’s own data sheet, page or FAQ, and the three stages from GE’s guide to dry and cure times. Checked against published data from GE Sealants, DAP, Sashco, Red Devil and Sika.
