Caulk vs silicone: which one?

Use 100% silicone in wet places you won’t paint, and a latex caulk where you will. A hybrid sealant does both, and the name on the tube won’t always tell you which you have.

Which to pick

GE’s advice is to match the product to the place: moisture-heavy areas call for 100% silicone, and painted finishes call for a hybrid. DAP’s guide draws the line in the same place, with caulk for indoor work where paint and a clean finish matter and sealant for moisture, movement and weather.

Switching from silicone to caulk

Every bit of the old silicone has to come out first. DAP says ALEX PLUS and DYNAFLEX ULTRA won’t adhere over it, and Red Devil says silicone won’t even adhere to itself. Removing old silicone has GE’s steps.

Common questions

Is silicone the same as caulk?

The words get used loosely. DAP's guide calls the paintable indoor kind caulk and the kind made for moisture, movement and weather sealant, and 100% silicone is sold as a sealant.

Is silicone better than caulk?

Neither is better everywhere. Silicone holds up in wet places but can't be painted; latex caulk takes paint, but many of DAP's aren't for a bath or shower. A hybrid sits between them.

Can you put caulk over silicone?

No. DAP and Sashco say theirs won't stick to silicone, and Red Devil says silicone won't adhere to itself or other sealants. Cut and clean it out first.

Is silicone waterproof?

Makers sell their silicones as waterproof seals, but DAP and GE both rule out continuous underwater use. A part that sits in water needs a product made for that.
