Glass glue
Loctite Glass Glue bonds clear, tinted, stained and opaque glass, and crystal, to itself and to metal and some plastics. Its data sheet sets firm limits:
Indoors only.
The pieces must fit closely. It won’t fill gaps.
Up to 180°F, and never in the oven or microwave.
Wait a week before it goes in the dishwasher.
Don’t clean the glass with detergent: Loctite says its residue can weaken the bond.
Super glue and epoxy
Read the label before reaching for super glue. Loctite’s Gel Control and its Plastics Bonding System both rule glass out, and Gorilla’s super glues don’t list it. Gorilla Epoxy, Loctite’s Instant Mix 5 Minute and J-B Weld ClearWeld do list glass, and ClearWeld stays clear in a layer thinner than 15 mil.
Mirrors
A mirror is glued to a wall, not to glass, and a falling mirror can hurt someone. The adhesive makers ask for support:
Gorilla says to use mechanical fasteners as well when hanging large mirrors with its construction adhesives.
Loctite PL Premium Max needs a permanent support system, such as clips or a mirror channel, at the top and bottom, and isn’t for overhead mirrors.
Loctite Power Grab Ultimate lists mirrors as a use to avoid.
The glues for glass and the mirror rules come from Loctite’s, Gorilla’s and J-B Weld’s product pages and data sheets. Checked against published data from Henkel, Gorilla Glue Company, J-B Weld, Eclectic Products and Pittsburgh Paints Company.
