Most latex caulks and hybrid sealants we read take paint, each after its own wait, from 20 minutes to a week or more (DAP KWIK SEAL ULTRA is an exception). No maker we read says 100% silicone can be painted.
Does paint stick to silicone?
No maker we read says it does. Sherwin-Williams, a paint maker, says pure silicone caulk should not be painted. GE says 100% silicone does not take paint well, and Custom Building Products says paint will not adhere to its Commercial 100% Silicone. Sashco is the bluntest: nothing sticks to silicone, not paint and not new caulk, because oils migrate out of the bead.
The silicone makers’ answer is to paint first. DAP says to paint the surface before applying its 100% silicones, Red Devil says to complete all painting before its 100% Silicone goes on, and Custom Building Products says painting should be done before its silicone is installed. GE says that where a joint needs 100% silicone, the better approach is often a color-matched or clear product.

From each product’s own page or data sheet.
Not paintable, by their makers’ own sheets: DAP KWIK SEAL ULTRA, DAP 100% Silicone Kitchen, Bath & Plumbing, DAP SILICONE MAX Kitchen & Bath, DAP 100% Silicone Window, Door & Siding, GE Advanced Silicone 2 Kitchen & Bath, GE Supreme Silicone Kitchen & Bath, GE Concrete Silicone 2, GE Advanced Silicone 2 Window & Door, GE Supreme Silicone Window & Door, GE Tub & Tile Silicone 1, Red Devil 100% Silicone, Custom Building Products Commercial 100% Silicone and LATICRETE LATASIL.
“Paintable silicone” is a hybrid
Two products sold as paintable silicone are something else on their data sheets. GE’s Paintable Silicone Supreme lists a silane modified polymer, a hybrid formula, and Red Devil’s Paintable Silicone lists a proprietary MS polymer blend; its own page calls it a hybrid sealant. Red Devil’s sheet also disagrees with itself: paint and rain ready in 30 minutes, but cure at least 2 hours before water.
Why paint cracks on caulk
GE and OSI both note that paints are more rigid than sealants and may crack, wrinkle or lose adhesion as the sealant moves in extreme conditions. Sashco says flat or brittle paints are more likely to crack over Big Stretch, and to test before painting.
Henkel says fisheye is uncommon but can happen even with latex paint on paintable sealants, that two or more coats may be needed to deal with it, and to test a small area first.
Caulk first, then paint
- GE’s how-to puts caulk before paint: fill the gaps, let the bead dry, then paint, and check the label for the wait first.
- On prefinished siding or trim, Henkel says sealant should not be tooled, smeared or feathered onto the finish.
- Oil paint: DAP ALEX PLUS, ALEX FLEX and KWIK SEAL PLUS take latex or oil. GE Pro Seal Max and OSI QUAD MAX Clear want a latex primer first, and DAP ULTRA CLEAR takes latex only. DAP’s AMP FAQ says to use a latex primer under oil, while its data sheet says to use only acrylic latex coatings.
